A neighbour adopting a dog, on 12-hour shifts — CELPIP Speaking Task 1

One of the 24 questions in the Task 1 pool — 30 seconds to prepare, 90 seconds to speak, no second take. What the section is: the CELPIP test format.

12 Your neighbour Ben lives alone, works twelve-hour shifts, and has decided to adopt a large young dog from the shelter this month. Tell him what you think he should do, and why.

Speaking to: Ben, your neighbour

What the question is asking for

The decision is made and the month is set, so the question is whether he goes ahead, delays, or changes something about the plan.

What to settle in the 30 seconds

Put the shift length and the size of the dog together, and decide what the animal’s day would look like. That is your reason.

Where this one goes wrong

Saying how good dogs are for people who live alone. Both halves of the difficulty are in the prompt; an answer that ducks them is a compliment, not advice.
